OUR COMMITMENT TO THE ENVIRONMENT

Environment and climate

We aim to reduce the environmental impact of our activities and to use natural resources efficiently and responsibly. We invest in renewable energy and support the development of low-carbon technologies and fuels.

CONNECTING RESOURCES FOR A SUSTAINABLE WORLD

Trafigura's climate strategy

Our climate strategy focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with the supply of energy and commodities - at our own operations and working with counterparts to decarbonise supply chains; developing renewable and low-carbon energy and carbon solutions; and managing climate-related risks.

REDUCING OPERATIONAL EMISSIONS

Pathway to carbon neutrality by 2050

We are committed to reducing emissions from our operations with a target to reduce operational emissions by over 50% by 2032. We have also set out an indicative pathway to achieve operational carbon neutrality by 2050.

Reducing emissions

Scope 1 and 2 emissions

Our goal is to significantly reduce our operational greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 and Scope 2), with the aim of cutting emissions by over 50% by 2032 compared to FY2020. We plan to achieve this by taking several actions, including closing or converting carbon-intensive assets, purchasing renewable electricity, implementing energy-efficient measures at our operations, and incorporating low-carbon vessels into our shipping fleet.

Scope 3 emissions

Scope 3 emissions refer to indirect greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that occur as a result of our business activities but are outside of our direct control. These emissions are associated with the entire value chain including the extraction, production, processing and transportation of the products we purchase and supply to customers. We also calculate the ‘downstream’ scope 3 emissions associated with the commodities we produce from sites that we own or operate. Our target is to reduce the upstream scope 3 emissions associated with the non-ferrous metals we supply to customers by 10% by 2030, compared to 2020.

MORE SUSTAINABLE OPERATIONS

Environmental management

We aim to reduce our impact on the environment in the areas where we work. We take measures to address environmental concerns such as biodiversity, water conservation, waste management, spill prevention, and air quality.
