While the risk of oil spills can never be eliminated, how we detect and respond to them is critical in limiting their environmental impact. At Trafigura, we are using drones equipped with high-resolution infrared sensors to monitor oil spills more effectively.

Traditionally, aircraft such as planes and helicopters were used to visually inspect affected areas. This approach was often time-consuming, costly, and limited in scope –particularly in remote or expansive locations. Weather delays further hindered timely responses, allowing spills to spread unchecked.

By contrast, drones provide real-time data on the location, size and thickness of oil slicks, enabling emergency teams to respond faster and more accurately. Their infrared cameras allow for round-the-clock monitoring, including during night-time operations, offering a clearer picture of how a situation is evolving.

Compared to conventional aerial surveillance, drone technology offers a more scalable, cost-efficient and flexible solution.

Deploying drones for spill monitoring is just one of the many ways we are leveraging innovation to protect our people, preserve the environment and support the communities where we operate.
