Making Puma Energy’s construction sites safer with AI

As part of our drive to improve health and safety through innovation, Puma Energy has introduced Guardian Vision, an AI-powered safety monitoring system that analyses video feeds on construction sites to detect safety violations.
The technology is currently being trialled at two construction sites in South Africa and Namibia.
Construction environments are inherently high-risk and require constant vigilance. Manual monitoring is resource-intensive, subject to human error and often inconsistent. Delays in identifying hazards or lapses in compliance can significantly increase the likelihood of accidents.
Guardian Vision addresses these challenges by continuously analysing CCTV footage every 30 seconds. The system uses a customisable checklist, tailored to specific sites and tasks, to detect unsafe behaviours – such as workers not wearing personal protective equipment (PPE).
The system can instantly flag safety violations and potential hazards to the site supervisor via email, enabling faster corrective actions.
Early results from the pilot have been encouraging, with the system exceeding current safety monitoring benchmarks. Under test conditions, Guardian Vision has shown:
success rate in identifying unsafe scenarios
success rate in validating safe conditions
Guardian Vision is a powerful example of how we are applying artificial intelligence to enhance workplace health and safety – by improving hazard detection, strengthening compliance and ultimately creating safer working environments across our construction and operational sites in the future.
